children living at Priory, Bovey Tracey, have sent a 'kill your speed, not me' message to motorists. Youngsters and other residents in the street are campaigning for drivers to slow down when travelling along the road, because they say it will not be long before a child is killed because of a speeding motorist. More than 60 residents started the roadside campaign on Friday, and will continue to campaign each day until official signs are put up telling drivers to slow down. A petition has also been set up and been signed by more than 100 people. 'This problem has been going on for years,' said Kelly Hayman-Bruce, who is spearheading the protest. 'The whole street is involved in this campaign. We'll continue each day until something is done. Children have made banners and we even have a small coffin to highlight that someone could die because of speeding drivers. 'We've had many near misses as far as accidents are concerned. We want people to slow down as this is a built-up area.' Mrs Hayman-Bruce said that so far motorists had been positive about the battle to drive down speeds. 'They have slowed down and have been really polite. People have to realise that young children who are too young to go the nearby field, play in the street,' she said. The town council is supporting the campaign to curb speeds at Priory. 'The council has advised us on the best way to go about sorting out this issue. We also had Cllr Fernley Holmes, Cllr Audrey Warren and Cllr Anna Klinkenburg support us at the start of the campaign. 'I am now going to contact our MP and other district councillors about this problem.' Bovey Tracey mayor Cllr George Gribble said: 'Residents of the Priory need help and want action, and the town council is fully supportive of this campaign. 'They aren't objecting to people using the road, it is the speed that drivers travel along the Priory that the residents are worried about. 'Vehicles park along Priory make the road narrower, and this is potentially even more dangerous as far as speeding vehicles are concerned.' Cllr Gribble added: 'Some drivers even mount the pavement and we are worried about pedestrians, particularly children and the elderly.'
