Final preparations are under way for Sunday's Dartmoor Classic Cyclosportive, for which the entry of 2,225 is the biggest in its four-year history, with the event fully subscribed months ago.
Devon has the largest number of entries for the Dartmoor Partnership-sponsored event, but riders are travelling from as far as the USA, France, Holland and Germany.
Ed Coats, who skied nearly 500 miles to the South Pole with James Cracknell and Ben Fogle (covered in a five part BBC documentary) will launch his 30at30 challenge with his 100-mile entry. He plans to complete 30 endurance events in his 30th year.
British Cycling has a stall at the event, which starts at Abbrook, Kingsteignton, and new MPs Anne Marie Morris (Newton Abbot) and Dr Sarah Wollaston (Totnes) will be adding their support to cycling in Devon.
The organisers would appreciate as many early registrations tomorrow (2pm-6pm) as possible at the depart village at Abbrook Sports Club, Kingsteignton, where the event starts the following day.
There will be prize draws every hour tomorrow, and music, stalls, a pasta party and members of Mid-Devon Cycle Club to entertain you.
Starting in Kingsteignton, the route takes in the climbs of Trendlebere Down, Holne Chase Hill and Merrivale Hill, while Princetown, Hexworthy, Postbridge and Two Bridges are visited along the way. There is a choice between a 100km course or, for the seriously competitive rider, 100 miles.
The event – orgnised by Mid-Devon Cycle Club, which uses funds raised to support young riders – was sold out by the end of March. Donations are also made to local charities.
So watch out on Sunday for those lycra-clad cyclists – and why not have a go yourself in 2011?MORE SPORT IN OUR ONLINE EDITION
