ROCK Choirs from across South Devon all joined together to put on a Christmas concert in aid of Rowcroft Hospice in Torquay.

More than 200 Singers from Newton Abbot, Teignmouth and Torquay Rock Choirs sang their hearts out to a sell-out audience in the Centenary Hall at Torquay Boys’ Grammar school.

The ‘Rockies’ are very proud to be supporting Rowcroft this year and the proceeds of the concert will be added to other fund raising evenings, events and charity nights that the choirs have organised throughout the autumn term.

Many choir members have strong emotional connections with this local charity and the concert was part of a term of fund raising activities which included cake and coffee nights, quiz nights and theme nights at choir rehearsals.

The total figure raised currently stands at £2,000.

The South Devon Rock Choirs have had a busy December singing in the local community including the Totnes Christmas Market, Teignmouth Christmas Lights Switch on and Powderham Castle Christmas Lights Trail.

The mini Christmas tour ended in Newton Abbot on December 21 when the choir sang at the mayor’s Carol Service by the Clock Tower.

The Rock Choir is an all-inclusive community choir for all ages, abilities and experiences. Their ethos is centred around fun and friendship though singing together modern contemporary rock and pop songs in harmony.

The choir director, Richard Toomer said:  ‘We just loving singing together every week.

‘It gives us all such an uplifting experience and singing is so good for the soul and our general health and well-being.’

Richard went on to say ‘There are so many people out there who love to sing but lack that bit of self-confidence to go and join a choir.

‘Rock Choir will give new members a safe and comfortable environment in which to enjoy singing and improve their confidence.

‘It’s a great pick me up each week and we all need that at the moment don’t we?
