ONE hundred golfers, making up 25 teams, supported the Rotary Club Newton Abbot annual business golf day to raise funds for local charities.
The ninth consecutive year of the event at Dainton Park Golf Club raised more than £4,500 for The Buckland Community Centre Association, Rowcroft Hospice and other local charities which the rotarians support.
President Martin Smith said donations of £1,500 each were to be presented to the community centre and the hospice.
He said: ‘Thank you to the golfers and businesses who supported this event, which demonstrates that local businesses, when given the opportunity, are very willingly to help the community they operate in.’
Winners of the day were System6 Kitchens led by Nigel Jones with 124 points, closely followed by the team from Off Zero with 123 points.
The day included competitions on 10 holes; a ‘beat the pro’; putting competition; and a ‘guess where the president’s drive went’.
Organiser and corporate Rotarian Clive Meredith, of Wollen Michelmore Solicitors, thanked everybody for attending and for their generosity and good humour, and the array of home cooked cakes and refreshments on the eighth hole.
Hayley Norrish, of Rowcroft Hospice, said: ‘We’d like to say a huge thank you to Newton Abbot Rotary Club for organising such a fantastic golf day and helping to make every day the best day possible for people living with life-limiting illnesses in south Devon.
‘Now more than ever we are so grateful for your support and thank you for going to such efforts to raise funds for Rowcroft.’
