A GROUP of 31 fundraisers from across South Devon conquered Mount Kilimanjaro after a seven-day trek to raise money for Rowcroft Hospice.
The Team Rowcroft climbers reached Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Africa’s highest mountain, at around 6am BST on Thursday, September 10.
Standing at 5,895 metres above sea level, the summit marked the end of months of training and fundraising for the group, who tackled the challenging Machame Route in Tanzania.
Their efforts have already raised £122,500 for Rowcroft, which provides hospice care and support for people living with life-limiting illnesses and their families across South Devon.
Among those taking part was 15-year-old Andrew Morgan from Babbacombe, the youngest member of the team. He completed the climb alongside his parents, Louise and Dan.
Andrew said the challenge had been an unforgettable experience, particularly the friendships he formed along the way.
‘Trekking Kilimanjaro with the Rowcroft team was very cool!’ he said.
‘I made loads of friends with our Tanzanian support crew and with my Rowcroft teammates.
‘We supported each other through the good times and when we were feeling rough with the altitude’.
The teenager also had a personal reason for taking part, dedicating the achievement to his grandmother, who had been cared for by Rowcroft.
‘I know Nanny, who was cared for by Rowcroft, would be so proud’, he said.
‘An adventure I will never forget!’.
Molly Billingsley, Rowcroft’s community and challenges fundraiser, said reaching the summit was a ‘fantastic achievement’ following the team’s months of preparation.
The climbers are now heading home to South Devon, where they will have the chance to recover and celebrate completing the challenge.
Rowcroft said the money raised through challenges such as the Kilimanjaro trek helps it continue providing vital care to local people and their families.
