Rowers are preparing for a historic race up the River Teign that takes place later this month.

The Barham Cup is a relay race that sees teams of two or four head up the River Teign in Regatta style dinghies.

After leaving the Fish Quay in Teignmouth, the boats row to Coombe Cellars where crews are swapped before the race resumes with teams battling to reach Newton Town Quay in the quickest time.

The race began 101 years ago when the crew from HMS Barham, which was visiting Teignmouth, challenged local fishermen to a race.

The Barham Cup is now organised by Teignmouth Regatta and supported by Teignmouth and Newton Abbot Town Councils.

This year’s event starts at 6.30pm on Saturday July 26 and the Cup and medals will be presented at Newton Town Quay at around 8.30pm
