DOG mess and broken glass is not being removed from a popular Teignmouth park since the town council's contractor quit.

Now many maintenance jobs are not being carried out and areas of the town are beginning to look a bit tatty, councillors heard on Tuesday.

It is the aftermath of a recent debate over Waverley, a firm run by the town clerk's son, which did a lot of council work.

Some members at the time demanded that the amount of money paid to the company to be made public. They stressed they were not suggesting any impropriety, but just wanted full transparency.

The clerk, Dave Tickell, told the finance and general purposes committee, that after the public comments: 'My son does not wish to do the work, under the circumstances.'

Cllr Dave Matthews said he had received a letter from a resident, complaining that her dog had been injured and she had a £200 vet's bill after the pet cut its leg on broken glass in Bitton Park.
