TWO retired police officers have today (Saturday, May 22) set off on a 303-mile ride along the coast on Saturday to raise money for an ambulance service charity and a children’s charity in Nepal.

Richard Whitehouse, from Bovey Tracey, and Andrew ‘Sammy’ Squirrell, from Teignmouth, plan to follow the National Cycle Route No 2 which runs from Dover to Teignmouth.

They say: ‘We are both ex police officers and now driver training officers with the South Western Ambulance Service.

‘We are both in our early fifties, well our bodies are, though our minds are obviously years younger as during our work through this difficult time we came up with the idea of cycling from Dover to Teignmouth, in Devon, close to where we both live.

‘Our aim, and we will do it, is to cycle the approx 303 miles along the South Coast.

‘We have decided to try and raise money for two charities, CFENC (The Charitable Foundation for the Education of Nepalese Children), a charity that is run by Rich’s sister to help with the education of Nepalese children.

‘Also the South Western Ambulance charity, this great charity raises money in order to help communities within the South West, helping support volunteers with the service and give support to those on the frontline within the South West Ambulance Service.

‘Please read more on the link on our Justgiving page on each of these charities.

‘Any sponsorship/donation that you make in support of our little ride, 100 per cent of it will be divided equally between the two great causes.

‘All costs for transportation, lodgings, food and drink will all be met by Rich and myself.

‘Please be as generous as you can to help support these two charities and help embrace our endeavour to complete this challenge.’

They aim to finish their ride in Teignmouth on Saturday, May 29.

By Monday evening they had raised £1,480 of their target of £3,000.
