WITH the long hot dry summer, entries in the vegetables section at the Ashburton and District Garden Association's annual summer show on Saturday were down, but the standard remained high. Flower entries, apart from roses, virtually held their own, with Mike Harvey taking seven top awards, including the Nat West cup for most points in the members' section. His brother, Dave, kept it in the family by taking the Ruseley trophy for the best pot plant in members' classes. The judges had a difficult task and could not separate the best in show for the Winifred Shute Gold cup. It will be shared for six months each by W Perkins, with his leeks having won the best in section for the third year running, and Joan Stacey, who took top honours with her dahlias. Margaret Stephens is more associated with the spring show for cooking, but her flower display in a pedal bin, won her the Major award for the best novice entry. An encouraging sign was the high entries in the children's classes and some new names among the winners, with Daisy Lewis, Aaron Wood and David Pearse now exercising the engraver, while Charlotte Stead remains unchallenged in the older section.
