TEIGN School, Kingsteignton, has applied to change to Academy Status from the beginning of March.

Unlike other education establishments, Teign has a head start, already being several rungs up the ladder towards becoming an academy.

In 1994 it converted to Grant Maintained Status and in 1997 changed to a Foundation School. The latter gave the governors ownership of the buildings and the land, and they employ all the staff on the complex.

From March 1, if the bid is successful, Teign School will have control of its own destiny.

Through the academy eight per cent of the money that would have previously gone to Devon County Council will go direct to the school, giving it even more control of its resources.
