Two league titles, one runners-up spot and a clutch of great individual and team performances – 2009 has certainly been a successful one for Ipplepen Cricket Club.
Having re-entered competitive Sunday cricket for the first time in many years, Ipplepen strolled to the South Devon Cricket League Division Four title with a team that incorporated both ends of the age spectrum within the cricket club.
Veteran bowler Bill Heath – it is no secret that he has his bus pass – regularly lined up alongside U15 players like Jack Lewis and Sam Wakeham, and the blend of youth and experienced delivered the club their first trophy of the season and justifies the decision to re-enter the league.
The second trophy came from the U17 team, who clinched the South Devon Youth League title with a squad of talented youngsters who are also making their mark in senior cricket within the club and at representative level.
Ipplepen's U15 team nearly emulated their older compatriots, finishing as runners-up in their division.
The club has been investing in their colts' programme for many years, and the fruits of that investment are now being seen in all areas.
Joe Abbot was awarded the U15 League All-rounder of the Season prize, and has recently been called up to the Devon U15 winter training squad. Sam De Friend gained his county cap at U16 level, while U17 captain Luke Tuckett scooped the South Devon Young Cricketer of the Year award, as well as representing Devon and serving as vice-captain for the senior first team.
Ipplepen are now looking ahead to the 2010 season and have already begun their winter training programme for young players, which will continue throughout the close season, with senior pre-season training scheduled to start in February.
Other exciting developments are also being planned at Moor Road, both on and off the pitch, and after so much success this season the club are hoping to continue their progress in all areas next year.
