Teignbridge Council is still assessing the potential environmental damage caused when a sewerage pipe burst at the Hackney Marshes Nature Reserve, Kingsteignton. Workers from the council, the Environment Agency and South West Water, were called in to deal with the leak which is thought to have first happened on Sunday. Tankers were called in to pump sewage out of the system before it could reach the fractured pipe, one of two which run under the reserve. Teignbridge Rangers erected signs informing people of the leak and advising them and their dogs to keep to the paths. A spokesman for SWW said the spillage had been 'very minimal' owing to the quick actions of engineers called in to deal with the problem. They had dug a large trench to both locate the leak and contain the spill. David Beer, assistant to the chief executive at Teignbridge Council, echoed the low key message and said that staff would continue to monitor the situation. No reports of harm to wildlife had been received at the time of going to press and it is not thought that the nearby River Teign was contaminated during the incident.
