A SIX-week closure of the A382 between Moretonhampstead and Bovey Tracey has begun, with motorists facing diversions until late August while essential highway improvements are carried out.

Devon County Council has closed the route to allow retaining wall repairs, drainage improvements and resurfacing works.

The closure, which started on Monday July 20, is expected to remain in place until August 28.

The disruption has prompted concerns among businesses in Moretonhampstead, which rely heavily on seasonal trade.

In response, Moretonhampstead Parish Council has installed ‘Businesses Open As Usual’ signs alongside the official road closure notices in a bid to reassure visitors that the town remains accessible.

The council is encouraging residents and visitors alike to continue supporting the town's independent shops, cafés, pubs and hospitality venues during the works, stressing that every visit will help local businesses through the challenging period.

The closure is also affecting public transport.

Country Bus service 178 is operating to a temporary timetable and will be diverted via the Teign Valley, meaning it is unable to serve Lustleigh while the road remains closed.

To maintain connections, Devon County Council has arranged a free replacement taxi service between Lustleigh and Bovey Tracey.
