May I, through your paper, make a request to the people who enjoyed sledging on Dartmoor when we had snow a few weeks ago. I am thinking of the Haytor area but am sure it applies to other areas of Dartmoor.
After the snow and ice melted there was a great deal of broken plastic left behind. the sledges were obviously not strong enough and the owners were not concerned enough to take the debris home at the time. Perhaps they could pop back one weekend to collect the shards of plastic and other rubbish that they left.
We walk the moor daily and adore it, in all weathers and through all the seasons; the wild, rugged beauty lifts our spirits and soothes the soul.
It saddens me that other people who use the moor would leave such a mess behind. I do collect some of the bits and pieces, but why should I? It is not why I walk there. I am not sure who is responsible for keeping the moor clear of rubbish, I am sure the rangers have enough to do without taking on that task.
Many people regularly use the moor – dog walkers like myself, riders and cyclists, and the farmers who leave their animals there – but it does seem to be the people who come once in a blue moon who leave the most rubbish behind.
It can't be blamed on children as, judging by the number of cars that were abandoned (sorry, parked) at the road side when we had snow, they were all accompanied by adults.MORE LETTERS IN OUR DIGITAL EDITION
