HUNDREDS of pairs of old spectacles have been donated to a Teignmouth optician, and will be refurbished to help people in developing countries.
Mike Taylor, of Bill & Taylor, said the glasses would change the lives of thousands in Africa and elsewhere.
'I took out about 8,000 pairs with Vision Aid Overseas a few years ago, and it made a huge difference.
'The people may be educated, but if they cannot see properly, it reduces their chances of employment, especially in later life.
'Poor vision can also make life dangerous, but a simple pair of glasses can transform lives.
'This is a great charity; you know exactly where the donations go – straight to the people who need them.
'The people of Teignmouth have again been very generous over the past three months and we were given about 600 pairs.'
Prison inmates will help to sort the glasses before they are despatched overseas, with pairs available to suit most eyes.
Vision Aid sends out teams of optometrists and dispensing opticians from the UK to help educate and train local community workers in eye care skills, and set up clinics, screen large numbers of patients and provide appropriate specs.
Millions are still in need of glasses, and Bill & Taylor is starting a new collection phase at its Station Road store.
