Simon Wright, of Aller Brake Road, Newton Abbot, writes:
I sympathise with the residents of Twickenham Road for having to put up with speeding motorists with little help from Devon County Council. Aller Brake Road has had the same problem for years, with some residents and visitors to the top of the estate treating the road like a race track.
I have written to DCC, Devon and Cornwall Police and attended Newton Abbot town council meetings on the subject but to no avail.
The police say that this is a road design issue and I should contact the council who, in turn, say that speeding is an enforcement issue so I should contact the police. I was told to not take down the number plates, nor to take video or photographs of speeding vehicles as they didn't have resources to deal with this issue.
So good luck to the residents of Twickenham Road as I feel that your speeding issue will only attract some remedial actions if and when a fatality occurs.
Further, I strongly disagree with the recent MDA article headed Council allays rat run fears, regarding the opening up of the top of Aller Brake Road.
I raised this issue at one of the Newton Abbot DCC-run bypass roadshows – in response the council staff repeated over and over again 'we hope that won't happen'.
The council 'experts' then refused to be questioned further on this very contentious and worrying issue.
Residents' fears of motorists using Aller Brake as a short cut are real and justified as the bypass plans include traffic calming measures being installed in Aller Brake Road.
At the next roadshow I asked why they were being installed and I was told because of the extra traffic that would be coming down Aller Brake Road! So at least the plans tell us the truth!
Cllr Gordon Hook has raised some sensible questions regarding the bypass and seems to be one of the few voices of reason who is taking a genuine interest in the town – I applaud his efforts.MORE LETTERS IN OUR DIGITAL EDITION
