ROY WHITE, of Naseby Drive, Heathfield, writes:

The loss of the CCTV in Newton Abbot has caused considerable controversy and, as others have noted, the closure of public toilets would also be regrettable, not to say an inconvenience.

This is all about our local governments needing to get used to controlling their spending more effectively than they have managed in the past.

Between them, Devon county, Teignbridge district and the various town and parish councils, including Bovey Tracey, have enough money at their disposal for what is truly necessary; they just get their priorities sadly wrong.

What would the tax payers rather our money was spent on: CCTV or the thought control of 'equality and diversity'; public toilets or spending the select few on overseas jollies in pursuing the dubious benefits of twinning?

And then there are the vastly inflated salaries of officers of the county and district councils; what do they actually do to justify their share of the tax payers' money? Answers on a small postcard, please
