Financial troubles at Ashburton's Bank Youth Project have become so dire that staff have said they would work for no pay although leaders hope for better times ahead.

The deepening crisis was triggered by Devon Youth Service's decision in 2010 to withdraw funding as part of a review prompted by cuts in public expenditure.

The centre, created for the town's ten -19 year-olds, has almost 180 members and is open every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening.

It offers a typical programme of youth club activities but in addition provides life skills training and a confidential information, advice and support service.
