GARY MUMFORD, of Kiln Orchard, Newton Abbot, writes:I would like to add my best wishes for a speedy recovery for the 12-year- old involved in the serious accident in Highweek street, Newton Abbot, last week, particularly at this time of year. However, I disagree with Mr Gwilym's solution to this road safety problem. As a motorist who has driven through Newton Abbot on this road at 3.30pm, I can tell him that the sheer number of children all leaving school at the same time is the problem; perhaps staggering their leaving time would help. Also there should be railings erected around all the school to prevent the children spilling into the road.Anybody who regularly uses this road will tell you that the children are not conscious of the traffic. At the Asda/cattle market traffic lights there are railings around all the approaches to the crossings. Apart from the odd few not obeying the crossing signals, it is reasonably safe.Reducing the speed limit will only contribute to the already gridlocked roads through town at this time and particularly in the morning rush hour. This will be a costly solution but what is money compared to a child's life?Perhaps there are other projects that are not so important where the money could be better spent by the highways department.
