Volunteers have been giving the iconic bandstand on The Lawn in Dawlish a proper spruce-up.

The four-day community project was led by Dawlish Town Council which provided funding for the paint and equipment to give the structure, owned by Teignbridge Council, a late autumn makeover.

Volunteers from organisations including the Chamber of Trade, Dawlish Celebrates Carnival and other individuals took part. The main volunteers who wielded jet washers, paintbrushes and sandpaper included: Sean Nicks, Dave Luscombe, Craig Clarke, Alan Rabbage and Stephen Hodgkins, and town mayor, Cllr Val Mawhood, right, turned up to cheer the team on.

A town council spokesman said: ‘Our thanks go to No 1 Cafe and Ryders Bakery for sending over coffee and cakes on Sunday.  A massive thanks to all the volunteers’  

It was done to spruce the bandstand up in time for the Christmas lights switch-on to make the start of festivities on November 26. The structure will house an illuminated nativity scene with a Christmas tree outside. over that weekend a Christmas market will appear, with more than 40 stalls already booked.
