MEMBERS of Newton Abbot Probus Club were given a talk by a man who helped build Australia’s Brisbane Cathedral.

Master stonemason Peter Dare, who hand-chiselled the interior of the building, gave the group an insight into how the cathedral was built.

Mr Dare explained how the archbishop approached him and asked if he could leave his own mark on the structure and equipped with his chisel, he sculpted his own face into the building.

Peter was appointed Master Stonemason in 1990 and was set the task of completing the building in 2006 – 100 years after construction began – which he completed.

The club, which meets at the Corner Flag, thanked Mr Dare for his presentation.
