A POIGNANT memorial was unveiled in the grounds of Stover School last weekend to commemorate the involvement of Canadian troops and horses in Devon during the First World War.

Men of the Canadian Forestry Corps, known as the ‘Sawdust Fusilliers’, arrived at Stover in 1916, following a request from the British Government for skilled and experienced lumbermen to harvest the country’s ancient forests to supply the Western Front.

The ceremony on Saturday saw Lieutenant General Sir Andrew Ridgway, representing the Lord-Lieutenant of Devon, unveil the carved wooden sculpture of two Canadian servicemen and lumber-pulling horse.
