MORE than 100 protesters converged on Teignbridge Council's headquarters for a symbolic handover of their response to the district's draft core strategy.

Environmental and residents' groups arrived at Forde House, Newton Abbot, on Friday to submit comments on plans for the area for the next 20 years contained in the strategy, called Plan Teignbridge.

Housing has sparked a storm of protest – there are proposals for 14,800 new homes districtwide.

Among the group were Teignmouth town councillors who have drawn up their own core strategy, just for the town.

Mayor Cllr David Cox explained: 'We have come up with an alternative strategy and are taking it out to consultation ourselves. Already we have had 1,000 responses.'
