A Teignbridge school which has had nine head teachers in three years has received a damning Ofsted report and given notice to improve. The 95-pupil Chudleigh Knighton C of E Primary School was inspected in May and its overall effectiveness awarded the lowest possible grade four and described as 'inadequate'. The school's achievements and standards were also given the same bottom grade and in no area of its performance could the Ofsted team award better than grade three, satisfactory. It found that acting head Mark Musty had taken positive steps to improve teaching and monitoring, but that inadequate progress had been made since the last inspection. Mr Musty commented: 'We accept the inspectors' findings and are already working on the issues they raise. As they report, this school has now turned the corner and it's in a much better position than it was in September.' He said new 'target setting' had been introduced and he was confident of improved SATs results. The inspectors found that historically pupils entered the school with broadly average attainment but failed to progress. 'In the Year 6 tests, standards were well below the national average in English, mathematics and science, and the progress the pupils had made since they were in Year 2 was exceptionally low,' they said. They acknowledged the school had experienced 'considerable leadership difficulties' but found few other problems such as poverty or high numbers of pupils with special needs. 'Chudleigh Knighton has a number of strengths but overall it is not effective enough and does not give value for money,' they said. A Devon education spokesman said the county council had worked closely with the school to improve performance and that 'much closer working arrangements' with Blackpool would enable Chudleigh Knighton to 'benefit from the skills and experience of the staff at this much larger school'. Parents are being consulted on a plan to appoint a single 'super head' to oversee both the Chudleigh and Blackpool C of E Primary schools. Blackpool head, Paul Jones, has been praised for his leadership skills and expressed an interest in the top job.
