Devon county and Teignbridge district Cllr Chris Clarance, of Marine parade, shaldon, writes:
I believe residents would like to know that Broadmeadow, Teignmouth, is currently the subject of a tender put out by Teignbridge Council using outside consultants to choose a winning supermarket and who will build the supermarket and car park in the lower field at Broadmeadow.
In order to win the tender, the supermarket will have to pay for the next plateau up at Broadmeadow to be put into satisfactory condition to enable sport to be played on it. Tt is a former Devon County Council closed tip. So no doubt the bid will reflect the price the supermarkets tender.
A new slip road is planned into this facility opposite the entrance of the current riverside boatyard.
I attended the consultation meeting concerning all this at the Meadow Centre, Teignmouth, on September 15, when I said I wanted to see maximum use of the sports area with at least three full-size pitches for either rugby or football being created. There is more than enough room for this to be done.
The winning supermarket is due to be announced at a special executive meeting at Teignbridge on November 15; there are several in the running, according to a council officer.
We need three pitches at Broadmeadow because we do not know whether Michael's Field at Bishopsteignton will come into sporting use. I believe Teignmothians/Shaldonians would rather play sport in Teignmouth than elsewhere but because of the dire state of Broadmeadow they tend to go anywhere, even using Trinity School's Oak Hill Cross Road pitch. Hazeldown Field is now more used and Teignmouth Community College have allowed the cricket club to use part of its field.THIS AND OTHER LETTERS IN OUR ONLINE EDITION
