A LANDLORD acted swiftly this week to secure and clear a site in Kingsteignton which fly-tippers and vandals had turned into a rubbish tip.

The buildings, car parks, storage and service yards of the former Richley's – Vergo Retail (which operated Homemaker) off Newton Road and Greenhill Way – were fast becoming a health hazard.

Adjacent Oakymead Park residents had complained to Teignbridge Council Environmental Health Department, fearing the potential danger and calling for action.

While the district authority wanted to clear the site, its' hands were tied – it is private land, and a litter clearance order would need a fortnight to take effect.

When district, county and town councillor Mike Walters and Police Community Support Officer Vanessa Pike investigated the complaints on Monday, they were horrified.
