THE NUMBER of people on company payrolls in Teignbridge has dropped by 0.5 per cent in the last year.
According to figures on the latest employment and pay data, Teignbridge is placed 15th in a league of areas in the south west.
It shows in Teignbridge, in the year to August, Teignbridge has 56,803 employees on a payroll, down by 0.5per cent on the previous 12 months, below Exeter, Plymouth and Torbay.
Across the south west, the data show the number of people across the region was also down by 0.5per cent which is 11,878 employees in the year to August.
The figures come amid a widespread national drop in the number of people on payroll according to official data analysed by employment and wage app WageSight.
Employers across the UK trimmed staff by 126,953 in the year to August 2025, a 0.4per cent drop.
With the loss of 11,878 South West jobs, the region was broadly in line with the national trend.
However, according to WageSight, this obscures a more worrying picture in individual towns across the region.
WageSight director Paul Hebden, said: ‘The last few months have seen cut backs by employers across the South West, which reflects the picture nationally.
‘On the positive side, over the year wages for people in the South West seemed to still be keeping ahead of inflation, which is positive for families still enduring difficulties in terms of the cost of living.’
