Teignmouth Town Council marked the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Britain with a commemorative service on Sunday (September 21).

The ceremony included the laying of wreaths, a moment of silence and reflection and a dedicated ride by from the Armed Forces bikers.

‘Our community came together to honour their sacrifice and to reflect on the courage that helped shape our freedom today,’ a spokesperson from Teignmouth Town Council said.

The Battle of Britain took place on September 15 1940 when the German Luftwaffe launched a massive assault in the skies over south east England with the aim of obliterating the Royal Air Force. The Luftwaffe suffered heavy casualties in a significant defeat. It was the first decisive battle in history that was fought entirely in the air.
