BUNNY-GIRL HOAXES

The truth about the American Bunny Girl has been discovered. An apologetic letter, sent to a newspaper, from the person who made the definite bookings at hotels and then failed to arrive, has finally cleared the mystery.

Interpol became involved because of failed bookings made at hotels on the Continent. When proprietors wrote to find out what had happened, they were told that Miss Smith had been killed in a car accident. Now, ‘Gwen’ admits she made all those false bookings ‘just to collect brochures and stamps. It really started as a joke, but I really never thought it would get so out of hand like it did. I didn’t know how to get out of it, other than to say that I had died.’

CHOIR FESTIVAL

One of the highlights of the Old People’s Holiday Week has always been the Choirs Festival. Last week, the fifteenth, was held at the Carlton Theatre, when a massed choir of over 100 voices delighted a packed audience, while eight choirs were enthusiastically applauded for their individual  efforts.

YELLOW LINES

Teignmouth Chamber of Commerce is in favour of the yellow lines restrictions in Shaldon being lifted from October 1 to April 30. The county councillor had piles of letters from people protesting about cars being left outside their doors. The majority of the restrictions carry on for ever and ever, or the sign ‘anytime’. The signs were not needed in Shaldon in the winter.

HOOPOE

On Wednesday and Thursday evening of last week, Mr B Leyman of 229 Kingsway, spotted a hoopoe in Higher Kingsway. This bird is fairly rare in Devon.

TAPE MAGAZINE FOR THE BLIND

At Torbay Hospital, Mr George Causey gave a talk, with only a few notes in Braille and some excerpts from tape recordings, and kept the well-attended meeting interested for over an hour. All kinds of interviews had been recorded, and all kinds of sound, from a wonderful song thrush to a humpback whale.

Mr Causey said communications had been improved, so that the blind were no longer as cut off as they were. The field had opened up remarkably. The Association for the Blind had a magazine on tape called Viewpoint. He and Mrs Causey had 23 different lines that were circulated all over the county, with a quick turnaround after four days for listening.

WISE WORDS

Fishing is a delusion entirely surrounded by liars in old clothes. All who joy would win must share it – happiness was born a twin.

COLOUR TV AERIALS

At a recent meeting of the Urban Council, the director of technical services, Mr Ted Welch, intimated that he had required a tenant who had erected a colour TV aerial without consent to remove it forthwith. He read a letter he had received from a firm of solicitors acting on behalf of the tenant asking that the matter be reconsidered.

The committee recommended that in principle colour TV aerials should be erected on council blocks of flats. The chairman Mr Ronald Doel said: ‘This is a question of moving with the times. The trouble was that the roofs were so constructed that there was a possibility  of damage to the structure.’
