Teignmouth needed to win this game and hope Hookhills United, their main rivals for second spot and guaranteed promotion were to drop points.

Teigns set out an attacking formation and as the scoreline shows the tactic worked emphatically.

Leading scorer Jamie Surman led the line with Adam Fay and Matt Cayless forming a three pronged attack, backed up by a midfield of Ian Wilkinson, Steve Shrubb, Paul Tucker and Kerry Perriton who wore the captain's armband for this fixture. A defence of Craig Breslan, Dean Clatworthy and Nick Osbourne were in front of Alan Stuckey who relinquished his striker's role to don the keeper's gloves.

Teigns had several attempts on goal, the best being a 25-yard dead ball strike from Tucker that deflected off the defensive wall and clipped the crossbar but it was Surman who opened the scoring in the 11th minute with an accurate header.

Chances went begging until the 20th minute when Shrubb lashed home a powerful strike from the edge of the box. A minute later Perriton latched on to a rebound to side-foot in the third.

The ease with which Teigns were able to open up the opponents led to a bit of complacency and Abbots broke through but a superb diving save from Stuckey justified his selection between the sticks.

Osbourne should have opened his account but blazed high and wide with the goal at his mercy. Wilkinson bagged the fourth goal in the 42nd minute, beating Abbots' keeper with a rasping 20-yard drive.

Teigns had won the game in the first half; now it was just a question of how many more could they score in the second period.

Andy Breslan and Tim Fortune came on for Wilkinson and Clatworthy and Fay took over in goal for Stuckey. With just two minutes gone, Osbourne atoned for his earlier miss, volleying the ball into the roof of the net from ten yards. Andy Breslan picked his spot and buried the fifth goal in the bottom right corner of the net in the 55th minute.

In the 62nd minute Tucker unleashed a 25-yard scorcher that fizzed past Abbots' shell-shocked keeper for the sixth goal.

Shrubb created a chance for himself turning his marker and curling a shot towards the top corner but the visiting keeper, who had seemed reluctant to use his hands, palmed the ball on to the crossbar.

With the opposition posing little attacking threat, Fay joined the attack at every opportunity and had Shrubb and Perriton to thank on more than one occasion for their timely clearances.

In the 70th minute Teigns went seven up when Fortune latched on to a loose ball and drove home through a crowded penalty area.

The scoring was completed in the 81st minute when Perriton raced through and placed the ball wide of Abbots' despairing keeper.

Teigns had completed their season in style and, with the news that Hookhills had been beaten 4-0 by Stoke Fleming, they could now not be caught and were assured the runners-up spot and promotion to division three.
