TEIGNMOUTH stood with Ukraine last night as residents of the town stood in support of the war-torn country and its people.

The show of solidarity took place on Sunday [March 20] at the town's war memorial along the seafront in an event organised by Church leaders.

Jamie Redfurn, a Teignmouth Baptist Church Leader who helped organise the event, said:

'Tonight we came together as a sign of solidarity and compassion and it was truly heart-warming to see so many people come along - it is a continued testament to the people of Teignmouth.’

Around 200 people, many lighting a candle as a mark of respect for the dead and the displaced, attended the vigil.

Teignmouth Mayor, Cllr Peter Williams, said:

'It's great to see the solidarity in Teignmouth, but there was actually not only people from Teignmouth there was people from Shaldon and Holcombe there too which was great.

‘I hope it has some effect, every little bit is positive and certainly tonight [March 20] was a very positive and also a very reflective evening.’
