Teignmouth was alive to the sound of music and dancing at the weekend (September 5-7) as the town celebrated its annual Pride.
The free event was aimed at bringing all sections of the community together, regardless of age, gender, religion, sexuality or any other demographic characteristic that might attract discrimination, under the banner of inclusivity and enjoyment.
‘It was fantastic to see families and all sections of our community meeting together, breaking boundaries and enjoying themselves,’ said Teignmouth Pride event director Paul Burgess.
Residents and visitors, family and friends, packed the town to enjoy the entertainment.
Hollands Road was turned into a live performance venue with a stage hosting bands, community choirs, drag acts and children’s entertainers.
The rainbow magic spread throughout the town with businesses decorating their windows and flying flags. A market in The Triangle, craft sessions in Teignmouth Library and a Trans Makers Market at the Folk Preservation Society added to the atmosphere of community and inclusion.
‘One of our core values is to welcome everyone, #whoeverthefolkyouare,’ commented Folk Preservation Society founder Amerie Rose. ‘We were thrilled when Lena approached us about creating a safe and inspiring space where skilled artists and makers who identify as Trans or non-binary could share their creativity.’
Despite one or two complaints about noise, the community rallied round to support the event. Teignmouth Pride organisers said they checked sound levels regularly and that the live entertainment had finished by 11pm each night.
The Pride Committee, who are all volunteers and work throughout the year to put the event on, said they are grateful to everyone who took part, had fun and showed that Teignmouth could unite as a community.
The event was funded by street collections, sponsorship from local businesses and grants from the National Lottery Community Fund, Teignmouth Town Council, Tesco Community Support and the Teignbridge Councillor Community Fund.
Teignmouth Pride will be back next year running from September 4 to 6.
