New landlord wanted for historic pub

A NEW publican is being sought to take charge of what is believed to be Torquay’s oldest pub.

Stonegate Pub Partners are offering an opportunity to run the historic Hole in the Wall, pictured.

Dating back to 1540, the pub has been serving customers for almost five centuries and has become a familiar part of life in the Devon seaside town.

Its location close to Torquay Harbour, the marina and seafront means it attracts a mixture of local residents, tourists and day-trippers visiting the English Riviera.

The pub retains a traditional character, with cobbled floors, low-beamed ceilings and a historic bar area.

It also includes a separate restaurant with seating for around 40 people, a large commercial kitchen and private accommodation.

Stonegate Pub Partners is looking for an experienced hospitality operator, or someone with a background in another customer-focused industry, to build on the pub’s existing reputation and develop its food and drink offering.

Alan Turner, regional manager at Stonegate Pub Partners, said the opportunity was unusual because of the pub’s history and location.

‘Opportunities like The Hole in the Wall don't come around very often.

‘This is not just a pub, it is a piece of Torquay's history’, he said.

He added that the pub already had a strong reputation, but offered scope for a new operator to develop the business further.

The successful applicant will also have access to substantial private living accommodation, including three double bedrooms, a large lounge, kitchen and separate entrance.

Stonegate said the pub benefits from year-round trade, with customers visiting Torquay throughout the year to enjoy its shops, beaches and attractions.

The company is seeking someone who can maintain the pub’s welcoming atmosphere and high standards, while attracting both local customers and visitors.
