Last week, Climate Change Committee Chairman, Lord Deben, and the committee, told the government that we are not prepared for climate change and all the infrastructure updating that needs to be done.

It went unnoticed by most newspapers and the general public that in the report it states – that we should prepare for up to 4 degrees centigrade higher than preindustrial times by around the end of the century.

I am all for getting prepared, especially as we haven’t really started yet, but the not talked-about or even covered over is the 4C. What happened to the target of 1.5C in less than 18 years’ time?

If anything is a big red flag-poll with an alarm bell on top, this is it!

What this really uncovers is that the committee doesn’t think that our government, or come to that, any government in the world is going to be able to keep to 1.5C by the end of the century. And obviously not as it’s agreed we will pass this in 18 years’ time.

We need to unpack this a bit more. This means that we will reach 4C temperature some time in the next 70 to 85 years.

By all accounts, and what’s already understood by this means that our government and by implications, all governments are planning for the end of civilisation as we know it and in our children’s lifetime; whether they understand this or not! Yes, you did read that right, the end of life as we understand it.

I hope you can now see what I mean by the unspoken cover-up! What we should be planning for is to stop global heating, and not planning for the end of the world!

The final piece of the jigsaw puzzle is that at 4C higher the planet will be too hot in most areas of the planet for people (and animals) to live and grow food for an ever bulging population. The mass Exodus, which has already started, will run to the temperate north and south pole areas.

This in itself will cause collapse and panic as no country can cope with big changes in relatively a short space of time. This says to me that our government and others have little intention of addressing this climate emergency.

If you think this is a too pessimistic view, then look at the evidence. In the 40 years I have been interested in climate change and right up to now, I have seen little change that will take us off this path, and since COP 26, the CO2 and methane, are still going up at the same rate.

We may even hit 420 ppm of CO2 this year in March or April, instead of May.

It seems to me that all the time governments are saying we will keep to 1C, but secretly they are letting it rip to destructive levels.

What they should have said is, ‘let’s stop everything we are doing and plan to keep to safe levels of climate change,’ then I may believe they get it.

In my opinion most politicians just don’t understand physics or how the atmosphere works, and worse still, will not listen to the smart climate modellers. I expect you, like me, feel very worried and just don’t know who to write to. Probably the UN is our last hope!

The Earth Gem I wrote about the other week, must be saved along with all the wildlife and plants. Let’s hope our next PM has a physics degree!
