A youth theatre group – which has been running for almost 16 years – is to disband. The well-established group Acting Up will revive its acclaimed production of the hit musical Les Miserables – this, incidentally, is the full version – at the Carlton Theatre, Teignmouth, later this month to mark the end of an era. It will be the 15th anniversary production and co-incidentally the 21st anniversary of 'Les Mis' in the West End. Founder and artistic director Maggie Campbell has decided to retire and recently announced that 'The Glums' as it is fondly known will be her final production. 'When I started a drama club for local youngsters almost 16 years ago I did not imagine that I should be watching out 15th anniversary production – or that it would be such an ambitious one,' she said. The group has grown and developed over the years and has presented a variety of pieces including Great Expectations, Pride and Prejudice, Jesus Christ Superstar, Fame and West Side Story. A junior committee has existed to help run the group assisted by a small band of volunteers and has been totally self-sufficient, raising its own funds to pay for its production. A yearly bursary has been given to members and has helped send three members to the National Youth Music Theatre, and helped purchase equipment for musicians. Former members have gained places at RADA, Guildhall and other stage schools and have begun careers in the theatre. Technical training and expertise has also helped former members to take employment in local theatres on the lighting and stage management side. 'We were unsure of what to do with any remaining monies at the end of the production, but the untimely death of former member Helen Kirk has helped us make that decision. 'We will donate any residue to the foundation in her name,' said Mrs Campbell. 'May I thank everyone who has given so generously of their time and expertise to enable so many young people to develop their skill and fulfil their dreams.' The full production has only a few adaptations for young voices and follows the story of convict Jean Valjean as he struggles to make a new life in revolutionary France – pursued by the relentless Inspector Javert. Les Miserables takes to the stage from Tuesday, March 21, until March 25, at the Carlton Theatre, Teignmouth. Curtain up at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from the theatre box office or by telephoning 01626 865774.
