THOUSANDS of pounds have been raised by red-nosed efforts of Teignmouth schools, businesses and organisations for this year's Comic Relief Red Nose Day Big One. The money raised turns lives around in developing countries and at home. Teignmouth travel agents at First Choice took on a sponsored cycle ride outside its shop in Wellington Street, raising more than £515 for the charity. At Shaldon Primary School, teachers stepped back in time by donning school uniform, raising £154 as part of fundraising events. The school council organised its own fundraiser and made a giant 1.5 metre nose out of loose change, not to be sniffed at in raising £108. The school also sold red noses because the Teignmouth Oxfam shop is closed for a refit. It made £164. Teacher Charlotte Bouchard said: 'Our total raised for the whole day was £426, definitely the most we have ever raised. For us, it certainly was the big one,' she said. Youngsters also made a human chain to raise awareness of the Campaign for Global Education, a campaign supported by Comic Relief, which aims to raise awareness and funding to provide every child in the world with an education by 2015. Teign Diving Centre members raised £150 by scuba diving in their pyjamas at Babbacombe beach, Torquay. Teignmouth band The Quails performed in Teignmouth's Triangle on Saturday. They entertained a crowd which gathered on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Their efforts raised more than £450 for the charity. Staff and children at Happy Days Nursery, Broadmeadow, dressed up to mark the day. Nose painting, a cake sale and fun all day helped to raise £47.53.
