NEWTON Abbot held the region's only official St George's Day celebration on Thursday last week, at the town hall.
Assisted by children from the Magpies Pre-school, Cllr David Howe hoisted up the St George's flag (pictured).
Robert Browning's Home Thoughts from Abroad was read by Rachel Smith, granddaughter of former town mayor Keith Smith.
Cllr Colin Parker recited a speech by the Duke of Lancaster before, most rousing of all, Rychard Winslade, a member of the Borough Courts, read the famous Battle of Agincourt speech in Shakespeare's Henry V.
Also present was stand-in town crier Cllr Henry Cole and mayor of Newton Abbot Cllr David Corney-Walker, who said a few words to the gathering.
Steward of the Newton Abbot Borough Michael Martyn said: 'The weather was good and the event was a real success. General comment was that the celebration was done in good taste, too.'
