DO you have what it takes to scoop first place in Newton Abbot’s answer to Britain’s Got Talent?

Are you a diva who can hit the high notes? Does your dog juggle? Can your grandmother play the spoons?

You could bag yourself a recording session, a spot at a Seale-Hayne festival and other exciting prizes.

The deadline for entries is midnight on February 12 with a shortlist being published in the Mid-Devon Advertiser on February 19. The final will be held at the Bushell Theatre, Coombeshead Academy, Newton Abbot, on February 25.

All money raised will be going to Newton Abbot Crisis Aid, which provides a response to humanitarian emergencies.

The person behind Newton Abbot’s Got Talent is County Cllr Gordon Hook, of Newton Abbot, also a district councillor.

‘I really hope we can have some fun discovering hidden talents among Newton residents of all ages, while raising lots of money for this massively important cause.

‘I am grateful to both the Mid-Devon Advertiser and Coombeshead Academy for their strong support and thank them unreservedly,’ said Cllr Hook.

Brian Whiffen, an assistant headteacher at coombeshead, said: ‘The academy is proud to be supporting Newton’s Got Talent, particularly as it is for such a worthy cause.

‘We pride ourselves on our “community” ethos and hold it as one of our core values for students and staff, so it seemed only right and fitting that we help in whatever way we can.

‘Using the Bushell Theatre as a venue and encouraging the talent we have in the local and surrounding areas to take part will hopefully help to secure what we are sure will be a fantastic evening.’

Entry is free.

Upload your audition video, which should be a maximum of four minutes, to the Newton Abbot’s Got Talent Facebook page or fill in the application form on this page to audition at The Avenue Church, Newton Abbot.

When it comes to the selection process, the judges’ decision is final but you can show your support by liking the audition video of your favourite act on the Facebook page.

Town centre development manager Sally Henley said: ‘Newton Abbot is bristling with amazing musical and dramatic talent and we are often treated to performances in the town centre.

‘This competition is a great idea and I hope that when the winner is announced we will be able to persuade them to give a performance at the clock tower.’

Carl Munson, the community development and integration manager at Hannahs at Seale-Hayne, is supporting the event on behalf of the charity.

He said: ‘I think it’s such a shame that people look first to the TV and internet for musical talent when we have gifted performers all around us.’

Tickets for the final are £10 for adults and £5 for schoolchildren, and are available from various sources including Coombeshead Academy.
