A NEW speed camera is due to be installed in Newton Abbot within the next two weeks, the Mid-Devon Advertiser can confirm.

The camera will be positioned on Torquay Road, near the junction with Brunel Road, with enforcement expected to begin once warning signs have been installed.

The camera was originally scheduled to be installed in March, but the work did not go ahead at the time.

Adrian Leisk, head of road safety at Devon and Cornwall Police, said the camera formed part of efforts to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on the county’s roads.

He said: ‘As members of the Vision Zero South West road safety partnership, we are committed to reducing the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads – and speed enforcement in areas of harm is a vital element of our strategy’.

According to police, there have been 16 injury collisions within 100 metres of the planned camera between 2021 and 2025.

Devon County Council officers, as the highway authority, were consulted on the location of the camera.

The camera will enforce both red-light and speeding offences for traffic travelling towards Newton Abbot, while only speeding offences will be enforced for vehicles travelling towards Penn Inn.

It will be mounted on a street lighting column and painted yellow, in line with other safety cameras in the area, including those on Ashburton Road.

Police said large yellow ‘Safety Camera Coming Soon’ posters, featuring a 30mph roundel, have been displayed on both approaches for the past six months.

Advisory camera warning signs will also be installed before enforcement begins.

Police said all enforcement will be carried out in accordance with National Police Chiefs’ Council guidance.
