MEMBERS of the Court Leet and Court Baron of Newton Bushel and Newton Abbot recently gathered at Highweek Church to take part in the traditional ‘Oak Apple Day’ ceremony.

Friday’s event (May 29), attended by the Mayor of Newton Abbot, Louise Cooke, and guests, saw participants wearing sprigs of oak kindly provided by the Newton Abbot Civic Society.

Proceedings were formally opened by the crier with the traditional call of ‘Oyez, Oyez, Oyez’.

Oak Apple Day, also known as Restoration Day or Royal Oak Day, is historically held on May 29 to mark the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, when King Charles II returned to the throne.

The ceremony continues to be observed locally as a celebration of heritage and tradition.
