TRAFFIC is moving again in Newton Abbot town centre after a car blocking Courtenay Street caused significant disruption earlier this afternoon.

The red Citroën C1, displaying a Blue Badge, was parked close to the junction of Courtenay Street and Halcyon Road, preventing a number 12 bus from turning into Halcyon Road and continuing its journey.

The obstruction led to traffic building up from around 12pm, with vehicles queuing as far back as Union Street.

A group of bystanders eventually came to the rescue, lifting the passenger-side front wheel of the car onto the kerb to create enough room for the bus to get past.

The bus was able to pull away at around 2.15pm, allowing traffic to begin moving again.

Two Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) were also dealing with the incident at the scene.

Earlier, an eyewitness told the Mid-Devon Advertiser: ‘It is absolute carnage, the whole town centre is gridlocked’.

Another motorist described the situation as ‘a nightmare’, adding that they believed the car had been parked illegally.
