BRANCH line train services are not expected to open between Paignton and Newton Abbot until next week following the devastating station fire.

Fire damage to the station building will mean full access is restricted for some trains.

Train operator Great Western Railway said it is developing plans to ensure passengers can board and alight safely while Network Rail continues to work to make the station safe.

It is hoped to reopen the station next week for branch line services between Paignton and Newton Abbot.

The major fire cause extensive damage to the historic building on Tuesday.

Three teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of arson.

Services were unable to run on the line beyond Torquay but a full branch line service has since resumed between Newton Abbot and Torquay.

Rail replacement buses continue to operate between Torquay and Paignton.

A spokesman for GWR said: ‘We are working towards reopening Paignton station next week, subject to completing the work required to make the station safe for passengers and staff.

‘Significant progress has been made but there remains more to do.

‘This includes ensuring all new temporary facilities meet disability access requirements and that updated fire safety and evacuation plans, and signage are in place.

'We are sorry for the disruption this week's fire has caused to passengers and the local community and we thank customers for their patience.

‘We are also grateful to Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, Devon and Cornwall Police, British Transport Police and Torbay Council for their support.

‘In the meantime, long-distance services continue to start and terminate at Exeter St Davids or Newton Abbot, with the branch line operating to and from Torquay, and a road replacement service running between Torquay and Paignton.’

The fire was described as serious and the station building was significantly damaged.
