A HOMELESS man has denied raping a woman in a tent where he was living rough on Newton Abbot racecourse. Stuart Hodgkin, aged 41, did not attend the hearing at Exeter Crown Court and refused to leave his cell at Exeter Prison to appear by video link. Hodgkin, of no fixed abode, is accused of raping the same woman twice while she was staying in his tent at Newton Abbot in September last year. Judge Graham Cottle adjourned the case, remanded Hodgkin in custody and set a provisional trial date for January. Miss Emmi Wilson, defending, said Hodgkin was suffering from a serious illness but indicated he wanted pleas of not guilty to be entered on his behalf.
