SCOUTS of all ages marched through Newton Abbot on Saturday to mark the official opening of the Teignbridge District Scouts Headquarters. A parade of 170 Beavers, Scouts and Sea scouts ended in front of the new building in Wolborough Street to line up for an inspection by Newton abbot mayor, Cllr Daphne Watts. The building was opened by Lord Clifford of chudleigh, who gave a short speech before revealing a plaque naming the building after Peter Burdett, of Dawlish, president of the Teignbridge Scout Executive. The title came as a bombshell to Mr Burdett, who has been involved in scouting for more than 80 years. 'I was quite taken aback, the people who really deserve praise are all those who worked hard to get it built,' said Mr Burdett, who joined the Dawlish Scouts in 1926. 'It was a complete surprise, he had no idea the building was going to be named after him,' said Bob Grey, chairman of the executive. 'It was a great day and we were very pleased that every unit in Teignbridge was represented.' All nine different scout groups in Teignbridge attended the event, and each scout was given a special certificate to show they were there. They were treated to a celebratory barbecue after the ceremony.
