THREE members of Cockington Riding Club, Abbotskerswell, have between them won a gold and two silver medals in the finals of the 2009 Senior Show Jumping Winter League Championships of Great Britain.

The event at the David Broom Equestrian Centre, Chepstow, last weekend, saw 15-year-old Leigh Riggs, of Kingsteignton, take the gold in the 2ft 3in championship class, beating 28 competitors.

His mother, Andrea took silver against 30 opponents in the 2ft 6in over-35 years championship, and Karen Long, of Abbotskerswell, won silver in the 2ft 3in over 35 years championship in which she was one of 25 riders competing.

To qualify for the finals, which took place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the riders from throughout Britain had to have successfully completed a double clear round at their chosen height in general show jumping events.

All three won through at their club's events at Whiddon Farm, Abbotskerswell.

In the finals Leigh, riding 18-year-old Arnie, a 16.2hh grey gelding owned by Sarah Stirling, of Bodmin, was second, second and fourth in speed classes and first and third in the championship class.

He also rode The Goldmaster, a 12-year-old 18hh bay gelding owned by Roger Seaward, of Tiverton, in the speed class finishing fourth, fourth and ninth.

Andrea teamed up with her 11-year-old black gelding, Copperhalt Cosmic Charlie, in both the 2ft 3in and 2ft 6in competitions, taking the silver medal in the latter after completing first, first, first, first and third in the speed section and second and third in the championship.

Partnering Quantum Leap, a 15.2hh skewbald gelding, Karen was second, third and sixth in the speed class and in the championship was second and fifth.

She also teamed up with her 14.1hh bay mare, Maytime Blues, in the 2ft 9in over-35 years event and filled fourth and tenth places in the speed class.

It was a victorious return to Devon for the trio, who will now be concentrating on the forthcoming spring and summer competitions.
