FOR more than a year the Kingskerswell Against Library Closure Action Group has been fighting to save the village library and on Monday it launched LUCK – Library Users Club Kingskerswell. Having already won a reprieve until June when Devon County Council is again going to review its future, it is hoped the library could become a satellite of Newton Abbot. The county council is making a National Lottery bid and, if successful, most of the money would be aimed at providing updated facilities at Newton Abbot, but any cash over could go to libraries such as Kingskerswell. That could also see a relay link between the two by screen involving demonstrations, speakers etc. While only time will tell whether that materialises, LUCK is the latest ammunition in the group's armoury. It was launched by Cllr Sheila Hobden, county council executive member for culture, and Lynne Osborne, the head of Devon Library Services, who cut a special cake to mark the occasion. LUCK has volunteers who are assisting the librarian with work that does not require expertise – cataloguing press cuttings, assisting with topical displays, updating the local organisations reference file, preparing for children's activities, contributing to book reviews and assisting with visual aids. Action group publicity officer Gill Rawle said the library, which is based in a small building at Jury's Corner, has more than 800 members out of a village population of just under 5,000. 'Since last year we have had a seven per cent increase in book issue and a 20 per cent increase in registered members. The signs are that things are looking better. 'The library is not just about borrowing books. There are so many activities involved with libraries nowadays, including the use of computers. At the moment it is trying to save what we have got, but in the long term I would like to see a village hall incorporating the library,' said Mrs Rawle. Kingskerswell Library has never been blessed with good signs, but the day after the launch the county erected a new and larger sign outside the building.
