Teignbridge residents will soon be able to go on to the internet and tune into a new community radio station specifically catering for those living in Newton Abbot and surrounding rural areas.

Newton FM, brainchild of seasoned radio presenter Rick Edwards, will be based at The Music Mill, Bradley Lane, Newton Abbot.

'It's an exciting time for us to start this new community venture,' he said.

'As it's online, people from around the globe will be able to tune in and listen to what's going on in Newton Abbot and places nearby.'

The aim of the station will be to promote all things local, including news, music, politics and events.

Work is under way to get the station off the ground and a steering group has been set up – including representatives from the Mid-Devon Advertiser series, Newton Abbot Community Interest Company and Young Devon – to help the project become a reality.

Newton FM is now looking for wannabe DJs and volunteers to help out and run the media facility.

'We'll find a job for anyone who is passionate about radio, whether it's being a tea boy or radio engineering to presenting,' said Rick.

'All we ask is that people who get involved are committed and are happy to volunteer.

He hopes that the community will support and listen to the station thanks to its ethos of broadcasting local news and playing popular music.

It will also promote musicians from the area and have guest slots.

'Thanks to the facilities at The Music Mill, we could do live sessions with local bands,' said Rick.

'We have equipment here which is as good as some of the top commercial stations.'

An open night for volunteers to go along and find out more about Newton FM will take place at The Music Mill on Wednesday at 6.30pm.

'We'd welcome those who have had experience in radio or complete novices, as training will be given.

'It's a great opportunity for anyone who is excited about radio broadcasting,' said Rick.

Matthew Shanks, principal of Coombeshead College, and representatives of Newton Abbot Town Council, have already visited the station.
