Two Teignbridge residents have been rewarded in the King’s Birthday Honours.

Taryn Nixon has been awarded an OBE for services to archaeology and heritage and Dr John Carlisle received an MBE for services to medicine and patient care.

Taryn, who lives in Buckfastleigh, runs a heritage management consultancy that helps organisations to work with heritage as a force for good.

She is passionate about using cultural and natural heritage to connect people and place and is committed to ensuring that people and a sense of place should be at the heart of sustainable development, regeneration, restoration and recovery.

Before setting up her consultancy, Taryn Nixon Heritage Works, Taryn was chief executive and then a trustee of the Museum of London Archaeology. She is currently a trustee of the National Lottery Heritage Fund and chairs the Heritage Fund’s committee for England, London and the South. Until this year, she also served as one of the first trustees of Plymouth-based National Trails UK, which is dedicated to preserving and promoting the UK’s national trail network.

Ashburton resident Dr John Carlise, who works as a consultant anaesthetist at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation, was awarded an MBE for services to medicine and patient care.

As well as taking care of patients in Torbay and South Devon, John is dedicated to fighting fraud in international medical research. He has developed statistical methods that help spot signs of fraud in medical research and works as part of a global network of super sleuths to detect fraudulent and fabricated research data to help keep everyone safe.

‘We’re so proud of you John and we’re thrilled that your commitment to keeping us all safe has been recognised,’ a spokesperson from Torbay and South Devon NHS Trust said.

The King’s Birthday Honours List recognises celebrities and local community heroes for their achievements or services to the country.

Apart from a Knighthood or Damehood, there are three Orders of the British Empire: CBE, OBE and MBE.

CBE, or Commander of the British Empire, is the highest-ranking Order of the British Empire. These are awarded to people who hold a prominent role at national level or a leading role at regional level. This honour can also be bestowed on someone who has made a distinguished or innovative contribution to any area of life.

An OBE or Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is the second highest ranking Order of the British Empire. OBEs are awarded to individuals who have made a major contribution at a local level or who have gained a national profile.

Ranking just behind and OBE is an MBE or Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. An individual can be appointed as an MBE for an outstanding achievement or service to the community that has had a long-term, significant impact.

The King awards honours twice a year: once at New Year and once on the monarch’s official birthday in June.
