Thanks to a £3,000 grant from BBC Performing Arts Fund, Tykes, the youth section of the Teignmouth Players, are working on a unique summer project.

The news comes fresh after their tour to the National Theatre, London, as part of Connections 2011.

The youngsters will be working on Armadadrama, a musical based on the story of the Spanish Armada.

Not only will involvement in the production develop the skills of those taking part but by performing outside on the beach next to the pier, the company hopes to attract an audience that may not usually go to the theatre.

The group are also working with Teignbridge-based composer David Haines on the unique project, which will be directed by Leigh Toney, who runs the Tykes group.

'We should never underestimate the value of this experience for young people,' said David.

'They learn to work together as a team, be mutually supportive, use their initiative, and most importantly to believe in themselves and the worth of their shared project. Leigh's remarkable ability to bring these highly disparate young personalities together for a common purpose is a delight to observe.

'I know this production of Armadadrama will be a magical and unforgettable experience.'

Leigh is excited about bringing the project together.

'It has been an amazing year so far for Tykes,' she said.

'In a climate where finances are tight for everyone, in particular for the arts, this funding from the BBC has been invaluable for the Tykes, allowing us to continue to build upon our past successes. We hope to be able to continue to provide a diverse theatre experience for our members.'

The production takes place on August 13-14 at 9pm and again on September 3 at 7.30pm.

All shows take place on the beach next to the pier.
