A local paranormal fan is seeking to summon up some eerie evidence of Bovey Tracey’s darker side.

Eden Vesey is on the hunt for true stories and anecdotes about ghosts, spirits, unexplained sightings and other strange phenomena, from people currently living in the town or the wider area.

Bovey already has a well-known haunted building: The Cromwell Arms, reputed to be visited by the ghost of a Cavalier soldier who was captured and killed there by Roundheads in 1646.

But Eden is looking for the stories that haven’t been told yet; narratives that will cause local residents to look again at a familiar local building or landmark, and maybe to feel a shiver of unease about walking past it after dark.

She’s collecting material for a new website she’s creating, Bewitching Bovey, about the more unearthly aspects of the town. Eden also works with the Carnival Committee and is planning a special event for Halloween, involving the ghost stories … but more will be revealed about that nearer the time.

Eden, who lives in Liverton, said: “I’m looking for the stories that make Bovey Tracey a little bit … unsettling.

“Do you know of a haunted house or building in Bovey Tracey, a local ghost story or legend, something strange or unexplained that happened to you or someone you know?

“Is there a particular place in town with a spooky reputation? Or a story you've heard from a parent, grandparent, neighbour or local resident – maybe an old tale that’s been passed down through the generations?

“It doesn't have to be a personal experience — local folklore, rumours, legends and stories you've heard are all welcome!”

Contributors to Bewitching Bovey can remain anonymous, if they prefer, but the locations have to be identified, and must be in the town or the immediate area.
